Understanding the concepts of art and entertainment
Arts and entertainment are two of the most intertwined avenues in the modern world. Both avenues are recognized globally and have a creator and viewer base that extends to millions. The two also offer a plethora of career paths for aspiring individuals. But there’s a fine line between the two unknown to the masses. So here is an overview of arts and entertainment that will help people understand it better.
Defining art and entertainment
Some types of arts are a mode of expression that uses skill or imagination to create environments, aesthetic objects, or experiences that can be shared with other individuals. Entertainment is when an artist who creates any form of art turns it into amusement for the masses to enjoy.
Forms of art
There are three major forms of art. These are the basis for a series of art types, and they are:
Visual arts
The visual arts use any form of media to convey an artist’s feelings, ideas, and imagination. They are primarily visual in nature and have seven major subtypes that include:
- Ceramics
- Photography
- Painting
- Sculpture
- Drawing
- Conceptual art
- Architecture
Literary arts
Art expressed through written communication like creative writing, teaching, proofreading, and editing comes under the literary arts. Other activities that fall under this category are written prose, drama, short stories, play scripts, and comics. The literary arts have three primary genres.
- Fiction
- Non-fiction
- Poetry
Performing arts
Forms of art where artists use their physical body, voice, face, and presence to create a performance are known as performing arts. The major performing arts include:
- Music
- Theater
- Dance
- Opera
- Mime
Forms of entertainment
Multiple types of entertainment exist all around us. Some forms of entertainment include movies, TV shows, books, sporting events, comedy clubs, and video games. Concerts, food festivals, road trips, and pet shows are also forms of entertainment.
Child entertainment
The entertainer needs to strike a balance between physical and mental activities to entertain children. Puppet shows, clowns, cartoons, and pantomimes are some entertainment activities suitable for kids. Sometimes, adults also find them entertaining too.
Adult entertainment
Adult entertainment includes content suitable for those over a certain age. It includes entertainment activities like TV shows, opera, music concerts, and magazines that are unsuitable or do not appeal to kids.
Live entertainment
Few activities that count as live entertainment include TV shows, movies, music concerts, and live sports. However, unlike adult entertainment, here, artists curate content that is suitable for all age groups.
Public entertainment
Public entertainment has grown in popularity over the years. Entertainers travel around cities to perform in public spaces and may showcase their talent in art, music, dance, mime, or acting. By doing so, these entertainers receive money from the public for displaying their talent out in the open.
Corporate entertainment
This type of entertainment is organized for working professionals at private corporation parties like award ceremonies, corporate events, and product launches. Event corporations or entertainment agencies organize such entertainment.
The distinction between art and entertainment
Art stems from one’s imagination. The process often begins in the artist’s head and is then transformed into reality. It could be a musician who composes a song or a painter who creates an image on the canvas. These designs can be considered art when no exposure and sales are involved.
When one considers showcasing their work or talent to the world for profit, the art becomes entertainment. So any kind of activity that renders amusement to people in a passive way is a form of entertainment. Some entertaining activities involve people’s participation. An example is a musician who creates a song and releases it for the world to hear. Similarly, a dog who chases his tail can also be entertaining if the person watching the pet is amused.
Entertainment art
Art, as entertainment, is constantly evolving. There are different ways to look at it, one being the way people react to it. If the art is related to a product that can entertain a person, it is called entertainment art. This industry is also high in demand and competitive. However, it’s never too late for an aspiring artist to pick entertainment art as a career path. The term refers to production artwork incorporated in movies, games, and TV shows, as well as art careers in the entertainment industry. There are multiple jobs in this field. A few entertainment art specialties that people can choose as career paths include rigging, CG and VFX, storyboarding, concept art, visual development art, animation (2D and 3D), and character design.
